When to use a DOT COM or a DOT ORG

The web is an amazingly expansive place, and there are many different domain names you can choose from to help people find your website. The most common domain names you’ll see are dot com and dot org, but how do you know which one is right for you? It depends on the type of site you’re creating and your company goals, so let’s take a look at some of the factors that will help you decide when to use a dot com or dot org.

1) Use .com if your brand is global

If you plan on selling your product or service internationally, then it’s probably best for you to go with .com. This will mean that no matter where your potential customers are in the world, they’ll be able to find you via Google (the most popular search engine) and other search engines. There are some exceptions of course; if you were planning on creating an NGO (non-governmental organization), then .org would make more sense.

2) Use .org if you are non-profit

Many people ask if they should start their website with a .com or .org. The answer, of course, is that it depends on your type of business and your preference. For example, non-profit organizations are encouraged to choose an .org, but others can choose either. If you’re unsure whether .com will work for you, take a look at some related businesses and see what suffixes they’ve used for their websites.

3) Consider other factors like user behavior

While most business owners want their website at a .com extension, it may be prudent to do some additional research on search engine behavior before making that decision. A .com site is more likely than its alternatives to rank highly in Google and other search engines for certain keywords and phrases, and that could matter if you’re hoping your company will become well-known.
